When it came to putting it all togther, he wanted to include some background moments that weren’t always revealed in band’s public exposure and celebrate their incredible five-decades worth of achievements. That and of course the incredible back catalogue of songs that still resonate with fans of all ages. “Audiences today love to hear the songs and to sing along, but more and more they love you to share your stories as if they are part of a special group of friends, which indeed they are,” says Athol. “Fifty years on and time does not dilute the freshness or unique appeal of the music, as it still touches on all the moments of reflection, happiness, nostalgia and poignancy of the individual and shared times we all experience.”

The Seekers smashed onto the Australian music scene with their debut hit I’ll Never Find Another You and were quickly named Top Best New Group in the New Musical Express Poll Winners Awards. They joined a massive concert in London featuring the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, which earned them international acclaim. Their follow-up single A World Of Our Own went further to demonstrate that The Seekers were the band to watch out for as it knocked The Beatles from their place in the top of the charts. They’ve got an incredible back catalogue featuring hits such as What Have They Done To The Rain, The Carnival Is Over and Morningtown Ride to name a few.

The band’s line-up – Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley – were all joint Australians of the Year in 1967. They were the first group to reach number one on the United Kingdom charts with their first three singles, the first Australian group to reach number one in the United Kingdom (with I’ll Never Find Another You) and the first Australian group to reach number one in the United States (with Georgy Girl). To top all that off, they were also the first Australian group to reach number one in the United Kingdom with a debut album. Their song Georgy Girl was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song and they were also ARIA Hall of Fame inductees in 1995. In the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours, the four members of The Seekers were also each awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the General Division. That’s a pretty impressive history!

Drawing from this history, Athol starts the show with a selection of songs that influenced the group, from which they organically grew their own unique blend of strong leads and soaring harmonies. Tracks such as Little Darlin’ (The Diamonds) from the late 50s, to songs from Buddy Holly & the Crickets, Elvis and The Beach Boys to name a few, as well as some great gospel and jazz tunes. “Audiences will hear them all live as we practice as a backing group around some of Buddy England’s 60s classics,” says Athol.
